Calcium Supplements - Safe For Arteries

The blood vessels leading to and from the heart, calcium deposits have been associated with blocked arteries. This of course greatly increases the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Many postmenopausal women are concerned that the supplements to maintain bone strength could be harmful to the arteries in this manner.

A new study has put their minds at ease. Researchers found that moderate doses of calcium (and vitamin-D), supplements do not raise women's level of coronary artery calcium. For this study, researchers use "cardiac computed tomography" imaging to measure calcium in the arteries in 754 women who were aged 50-59 at the time. The figures showed that calcium scores were similar in women with calcium (1,000 milligrams (mg) per day) plus vitamin D3 (400 international units (IU) per day) by an average of seven years, as well as those who received placebo. What this means is to ensure that the moderate supplements of calcium and vitamin D (which are very important nutrients) lead to an accumulation of calcium in the blood vessels. Therefore, women need to avoid these supplements, and sacrifice the health of bones due to concerns about such risk.40 Modern science has shown that higher blood concentrations of vitamin D were linked indirectly to the development of coronary artery calcification in at least three trials. Ideal levels of D has yet to be determined. However, one investigation suggests that vitamin D concentration of 50 pg / ml may lead to the highest protection.
